- The subject of The Awakening is Edna Pontellier and her relationships with men (her marriage with Leonce, her affairs with Robert and Alcee, et cetera) as well as her "awakening to her individuality and self awareness.
- Kate Chopin is choosing to focus on Edna in this time period, the nineteenth century. because when the book was published in 1899, novels did not usually revolve around a woman having romantic affairs. The Awakening was one of the first novels to truly be a "feminist novel).
- The main point of focusing on Edna and her affairs while vacationing on the Grand Isles would be that people's relationships as well as identities never stay the same.
- I agree with this statement because people are ever changing throughout their lives. I am nothing like I was even three years ago, and my relationships have definitely changed over the years.

- The purpose of the novel originally when it was published in 1899 was to shake up to accepted social onventions of the time.
