DISCUSSION QUESTION #1

This quote from Chapter 38 describes the overarching theme or moral of The Awakening.Once Edna "awakens" she becomes self aware and has the desire to be independent in society. However, society is not ready for that at this time, the late nineteenth century. This leads Edna to having a year of excitement and joy in understanding that she is not a possession, but a person. On the other hand, she could have had a life full of ignorance yet still happiness (ignorance is bliss). Therefore, throughout the later half of the book, Edna is confused, unsure of whether "awakening" was worth it. In this quote, Edna Pontellier finally decides and states to the doctor that she was glad to have had that year of knowledge and understanding, even if it did eventually lead her to her suicide.
